Autumn has a lot of good qualities that I took for granted living up north. I was not a fan of the season. Fall meant winter was coming. I hat the cold.
I used to hate pulling out the heavy sweaters and numerous jeans I owned. I hated having to pack away all of my flip-flops. In protest I would wait until the temperature outside was 40° before packing those away.
We moved to South Florida a little over a year and a half ago. I was quite content with wearing my short shorts, tank tops, and flip-flops and the temperature always above 70°. The novelty did not last.
Don’t get me wrong, I love living in Paradise. This year I actually miss the change of the seasons. I miss the crisp fall afternoons with the Autumn leaves crunching under my boots. I cringe when the Florida natives call an 85° day a “crisp Autumn day.”
I miss taking the kids to the farm to pick their pumpkins right off the vine. There is nothing like farm fresh apple cider and apple cider donuts. The kids loved feeding the farm animals at Rhoda’s Family Farm in PA. When we lived in CT we would go to Jones Family Farm.
I miss how big Halloween is up north. Yeah, everyone started that stupid truck or treat. It’s not the same as taking the kids around the neighborhood. A lot of the neighbors loved seeing all the kids dressed up. I just don’t trust trunk or treat. You don’t know who is there. At least in you neighborhood you know who your neighbors are, and you just don’t go to the weirdo’s house.
Despite living in beautiful South Florida, I still wear my boots, and short sleeve sweaters. The leaves don’t change, but at least we have pumpkin coffee.
What do you love about Autumn?
